-Toxicology in Chemical Reactions-
Open ended question
How might we develop a more nuanced understanding of the relationship between dosage and toxicity of toxins, and how can this understanding be applied to create more effective and personalized treatments for individuals who have been exposed to these toxins?
Outline
Routes of Exposure
-
mouth (oral, sublingual, buccal)
-
injection (intravenous, intramuscular, subcutaneous, intraarterial, intrathecal)
-
inhalation
-
eyes
-
skin
Types of Metabolism:
-
Oxidation
-
involves electrons transfer and electron acceptors in enzymes when it is at its valence state (especially cytochrome p450)
-
insertion of an oxygen atom into the compound (R-H --> R-OH)
-
-
Reduction
-
Converts the drug into a more polar metabolite
-
-
Hydrolysis
-
Converts the drug into a more polar metabolite
-
-
Conjugation (phase 2)
-
couple the drug with a cell produced compound to make it water soluable.

Task
Students are going to construct a diagram that centers themselves as the focus and are going to label the environment around them.

🌱 Day 1:
Students will start to construct a simple diagram, and label the chemicals/environment that they are frequently in contact with.

🌳 Last Day:
Students are going to revise the diagram again and use venn diagram to label where the enzymatic reactions may take place. Followed by a brief description of the diagram to another peer.
